Body Mechanic Animations: Jump Across Gap

As you may know, I am currently working on body mechanics in animation all part of "My Animation Plan".

What's this animation plan?

Phase 4: Advanced acting

My plan is to go through through these 'subunits' of animation ideas and work on animations in that category until I think I have improved enough to go to the next "phase".

Yiynova MSP19 Review

I've waited a couple days to write and post this review so I could get a feel of the Yiynova first before telling you the pros and cons of the alternative-to-cintiq tablet monitor.

So for Christmas, I got a Yiynova MSP19 Tablet Monitor, a 19inch LCD tablet from Panda City.

The thing is great.

It can be adjusted into many positions for animating and drawing, the pen is working well, and it was 500$, tons cheaper than a 2,000$ Cintiq. Overall, the Yiynova has
filled all my expectations and more.

The only downside that I have come across is when drawing slowly. For example, if I'm quickly sketching a character out, using construction lines and shapes, after I finish the rough, I want to go over it in dark ink and get rid of all the extra lines. If you draw very slowly and hard, the line gets kinda bumpy. Now, this can probably be fixed by changing the hardness of the pen tip while going over the lines but still, this has been my only 'problem' with the Yiynova.

Overall, I'd defiantly recommend this product. You can buy it on Amazon

Basic Animation Exercises: 2D

Back to the basics! I learned a ton doing these simple exercises, squash and stretch, anticipation, arcs, timing, overlap, follow through, slow-in slow-out, etc.. Since doing these, I think I have a more sturdy foundation for 2D animation and its principles as I keep working and doing more things. All these exercises were described by StefanLipsius at 11secondclub.com, you can view the original post here: http://www.11secondclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=19597

1: Looping Ball bounce: First and Last frame are at the top of the screen
2: Bounce in place with a settle to a stop: First frame is at the top, last frame is on the ground.
3: Bounce across the screen with the same height each bounce.
4: Bounce across the screen, each bounce shorter than the last, eventually coming to a stop
EXTRA. practice working with a pendulum (Not included in the original) 
5: A pendulum swinging, eventually coming to a stop.
6: A pendulum hits the ball, causing the ball to hit a wall, bounce a few times and come to a settle, all the while, the pendulum comes to a stop as well.
7: Rubber Pencil: Overlap and Follow through exercise.

A man talks... to himself?

I learned a lot this time around. Animation and modeling and just the basics of maya! It was a great experience even though I ran out of time at the end. It was really fun though and I hope to do another entry soon.

4 Day Weekend and 11 Second Club Update 10/27/12

Hey Everyone!

This four day weekend has been great. Got a lot of work done, been getting ready for the winter sports season, ALMOST done with the 11secondclub, raked a bunch of leaves, and made a video for my dad's birthday.

Did tons and still relaxed. It's been great, makes me miss summer!

Tomorrow will bring some sketches and another 11 second club update hopefully!

A Four Day Weekend is Coming... Update 10/21/12

Hi!

I'm going to spare my sob story, I'm busy. This weekend flew by me quicker than Hammy from Over the Hedge with an energy drink. 

Yet, the good news is that I have a 4 and 1/2 day weekend coming up, YAYYYYYYY

Expect to see some tweaked 11 second club animation(s), a jack-o-lantern I'm working on, and some flash tests.

Swamped With School 10/15/12

Hey guys

Just an update...

I'm swamped with school right now but I'm still working on the 11 Second Club. I added lights, re worked the timing, added clothes to the rigs, new background.

All that's left on it is to tweak the lip sync and add some background paintings.

I also picked up a copy of HOW TO CHEAT IN MAYA 2012 for my birthday. I flipped through it and read some of the chapters, looks awesome and there's some great resources on the how to cheat in maya site. Just need some solid time to start and go through it.

The time between homework/studying for tests is getting physically prepared for some basketball but I still sneak in some 2D animation and 11 second club work, I recently did a leaf animation and a ball bounce that turned into character animation. Expect to see these this weekend. I don't have the willpower to render/finalize these animations at 11:30pm at night knowing I have Geometry in 9 hours so they'll have to wait 'till the weekend.

Just thought I'd have an update

Basic Drawing Week 5 Update and NEW ANIMATIONS AND SKETCHES

Hi there all!


Basic Drawing is going great! I got an A on the last project and its currently being displayed in the front office :) Oh yeah. haha 

We're working on a new project and its a collection real objects together. The objects that I chose are a collection of a Pepsi cup, some MnM's, and a big Plastic MnM guy in a chair-Looking something like THAT

I'll make sure to snap a picture for next week.

I animated a bit in Maya this weekend:



I think it turned out O.K.

I looked at my older CG stuff that I've gotten a lot better. I mean my first tests in maya were very.... Interesting.

So anyways I decided that eventually I'll gather up my older 3D stuff and make a progress reel for all my CG stuff. I'll start doing that stuff little by little, expect it coming soon.

Basic Drawing Classes: Week 3 and 4 (Plus Fall Painting and "Stand Up Animation)

Hi there everyone!

A bit long since the last post, been busy with school.

Week 3:

Finished up Basic Still Life. Fully shaded and completed and got an A on the project! Here's the rough copy:



No final picture of the project yet, our teacher still has them, if he puts them on display, I'll make sure I get a picture.

Week 4:

We started the "Sketchbook Series #2" project. We are to draw 4 life objects that are similar to cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders. I completed the drawing of the object itself for two shapes so far:

Keep in mind, I still have to shadow and touch up the drawings a bit



My other two objects will probably be a pumpkin and a pencil. I'm going with the Halloween/School-starting idea.

Fall Painting:

I tried digitally painting a bit in Sketchbook Pro.

I think it turned it ok, it was fun to try and "paint" a little bit!

Basic Drawing Classes: Week 2

Hi!

Week 2 of basic drawing is complete and so is the first assignment. We learned different shading methods and drawing different shapes. I touched up the shading for the drawings from last week because I felt that throughout the week I've gotten better but my scanner doesn't pick up some of the shading details so I decided to leave them out.

Daily Update #19: Modeling!

Hey!


Yep well, 3 days left of summer. Not sure if I'll continue these, depending how busy I am when it starts. I'm hoping I can draw or animate a little bit every day and post them.

 It's been a great summer, I think I've improved a lot, not only animation wise but drawing too.
 I'm happy with this summer, I've improved at everything and even tried modeling! Speaking of modeling, here's a robot and a whale I tried modeling lol, you can tell I'm a beginner and I have a long way to go

Also, I made an animatic for the 11SC! I don't know if I should continue but here it is. It's rough but I like the poses

Daily Update #6: 3 Different Weighted Balls

Hi there everyone!

Here's what I did today:

I complied all my demo reel animations so they're ready to go into the reel!

I also added arms to the surf sesh animation so that's completed! Yay!

Disney World in less than 5 days, Reel released in 4 days or less. Everything is going great!

Except that school starts 15 days............. I'm not sure if I'll continue these daily updates but not to worry, there's still 15 more daily updates :D

Daily Update #4: Demo Reel Poses and Disney Banjo!

Hey there everyone!


Here are the poses I worked on today! I did some drawing but I'll post those tomorrow

These are defiantly going into the reel! Unless I messed something up, in that case, please someone contact me and tell me!

Who here doesn't love Disney Music? Sherman Brothers, Alan Menkan, Michael Giacchino, the list goes on, Disney has some of the best music of all time in their movies.

Who doesn't love a good ol' banjo strumming? You can't be said when your listening to some good up tempo banjo picking. If you do get sad by hearing banjo music... You need to get to a doctor!

Daily Update #2: Demo Reel and Sketches

Hey there everyone!

Today's been a pretty good day, I have about 33 seconds of animations for the reel in which I've made this month alone! Also, with the ball bounces I'm going to do soon, hopefully that'll add 7-10 seconds then if I do a character animation it'll make a it longer as well!

Just a heads up...I'm going to Disney World August 9th so my daily updates will still be going, and I'll be talking about all the awesome stuff about Disney.

Now on to the daily doodles and animationsA cute kitten, penguin and some kids from Preston Blair book.

Some hands, a business man, a puppy, and some other stuff Lt. Dan walk- I wanted to go back and fix this guy's movements, before they were very abrupt now hopefully they are more subtle.

Daily Update #1: The Beginning

Hello Everyone!

I have decided to begin blogging EVERYDAY for the rest of the summer. Why?

Because I want to to be able to express my feelings on romance, drama, and reality TV.

LOL just kidding, the real reason is:

Because I want to keep track of what I'm doing and so I can make sure I upload my sketches and animations every day.

Everyday I draw and animate. I spend at least an hour doing both, but lots of times I get caught up doing something else so I don't post my sketches daily like I said I would do. Hopefully by having to update this daily, it'll be a kick-in-the-butt to myself to post my drawings.

Now I know I only get about 300 page views a month so not that many people will be reading this, that's ok. I'm doing this to keep track of my own progress and to maybe even become a better writer.

Stephen King, one of my favorite writers, once said that he writes everyday. 365 days of the year.

So maybe if I too write everyday, I can become a better writer than I was before I started these daily updates.

Ok, so now that we got all this settled, now let's get down to business. The stuff I did today.

I sketched some cartoon animals. And some dogs and a bird from the Preston Blair Cartoon Animation book.

Demo Reel Update 7/24/12

Hello everyone! The demo reel is going great. I had some troubles mid-july but I'm right back on track for an awesome reel. Here are the NEW animations:

And I still have to do those dreaded ball bounces, AHHH.

Anyways, reels coming out August 8th (maybe even earlier :) )

I can't wait to show off this demo reel. I think I've improved a lot from my first animation tests as "CartoonyAnimator"

April 11SecondClub Submission 2012

My second attempt at the 11 second club competition. I spent 4 days at the beginning of the month to make this. For only 4 days of work, I think its already better than my previous entry, and that's what I want and need, to get better each time I do something like this..

Hi there everyone!

Whats the new update today? Nothing much unfortunately. I haven't animated much recently other than just goofy stuff on my brother's iPad except this:

Its pretty rough animation but the point of doing this was to prove to myself that I am able to animate over a video. I am going to do this a lot come summer time.

Anyways. I haven't animated for a while. I've been pretty busy wrapping up school + sports. I've drawn a fair amount but those are just little doodles on the margins of my notebooks. I have about 3-4 weeks left until schools out. Until then, unfortunately, I will be animating just a little. I have a few major exams that I need to pass and some pretty big projects to wrap up. So I will be out of my animation desk for a bit :( but come summer, that's when I'll get back into it again and I'll make some new short films... IronDuck 3? Maybe :) 

Summer... that leads us into my next point...

This summer I want to become a great animator. I want to take a leap in animation/illustration/storytelling/etc. So I am looking for a mentor or an animation program. I'd be willing to pay.. If you have any ideas or are interested, email me at toonyanimator@gmail.com

Update: 3/20/12

Hey there everyone!

Its been a while since I last updated. I am working on the 11 second club animation so I've been busy with that. I also lost my iPad stylus so I couldn't draw sketches to share but I got a new one and will be sharing sketches!
